Fotografía analógica: las visiones subacuáticas de Frédéric Agius
Frédéric Agius, es un fotógrafo francés apasionado por el proceso analógico. Las fugas de luz, los efectos provocados por los errores del revelado y el grano, son parte integral de su estética y lo que quiere transmitir como artista. El uso de dobles exposiciones, también es recurrente en su obra y lo que logra con ellas es la creación de personajes casi míticos. Le gusta crear en el momento - no en postproducción- y está enamorado de las cámaras analógicas antiguas.
Frédéric Agius is a French photographer passionate about the analog process. The leaks of light, the effects caused by the errors of the development and the grain, are an integral part of his aesthetic and what he wants to convey as an artist. The use of double exposures is also recurrent in his work, and what he achieved with this technical resource was the creation of characters that looks like mythical creatures. He likes to create in the moment - not in post-production - and is in love with old analog cameras.
¿Cuál es tu primer recuerdo relacionado con el mar?
Fue en un viaje durante el verano, tenía ocho años. En mis recuerdos, el Mar Mediterráneo estaba picado y de un azul profundo. Quizás mucho más de lo que realmente era. Esto fue con los ojos de mi infancia. Estuve en Córcega con mi familia. Creo que estaba aterrorizado y fascinado al mismo tiempo porque estábamos en un bote y las olas hacían que mucha gente gritara (y también vomitara). Navegamos por debajo de grandes rocas, como por una cueva en un acantilado y el agua estaba increíblemente clara, fue muy maravilloso para mí.
What is your first memory related to the sea?
It was on a trip during summer, I was eight years old. In my memories, The Mediterranean Sea was choppy and deep blue. Maybe much more than it really was. This was through the eyes of my childhood. I was in Corsica with my family. I think I was terrified and fascinated at the same time because we were in a boat and the waves made a lot of people scream (and throw up too). We navigated below big rocks, like in a cave on a cliff, and the water was unbelievably clear, it was so wonderful for me.

¿Cómo se convirtió tu amor por el agua en el tema de tu trabajo fotográfico?
Realmente no lo sé … quizás porque quería combinar fotografía analógica con visiones del mundo submarino. Textura granulada con gente flotante ingrávida. Una cosa es obvia: siempre me ha gustado el mar, las olas y eso me provoca el deseo de crear. He pasado mucho tiempo en el Mar Mediterráneo, fue un proceso natural.
How did your love for water become the subject of your photographic work?
I really don’t know… maybe because I wanted to combine film photography with visions of the underwater world. Grainy texture with weightless floating people. One thing is obvious: I have always loved the sea, the waves, and that provokes in me the desire to create. I have spent a lot of time in the Mediterranean Sea, it was a natural process.
¿Cuál fue tu primera experiencia fotografiando bajo el agua y cómo te impactó?
Fue después de que compré mi primera cámara subacuática. Recuerdo que estaba aún más emocionado de ver los resultados del revelado que de costumbre. La primera sesión fue en una pileta con amigos, intenté fotografiarlos con mi nueva cámara, pero estaba apurado y las fotografías resultaron bastante… ¿cómo decirlo? ¡Experimentales!
What was your first experience photographing underwater and how did it impact you?
It was after I bought my first underwater camera. I remember I was even more excited to see the film development results than usual. The first shoot was in a swimming pool with friends. I tried to shoot them with my new camera, but I was in a hurry, and the photographs were quite… how should I say it? Experimental!

¿Tenés algún referente que haga fotografía acuática?
No, en realidad no, pero ahora me inspiran fotógrafas como Birdee y Kate Bellm, ¡me gustan mucho sus trabajos! Cuando era chico me compré, lo antes posible, revistas de surf y bodyboard, y tal vez fue un sueño de la infancia atrapar momentos bajo el agua.
Was there a photographer that inspired you to start?
No, not really, but I am now inspired by photographers like Birdee and Kate Bellm, I really like their work! When I was a kid I bought, as soon as possible, surf and bodyboard magazines, and maybe it was a childhood dream to catch underwater moments.
¿Con qué problemas podemos encontrarnos una vez que nos sumergimos?
¡La niebla en la máscara de buceo! De hecho, se puede llegar a tener los mismos problemas que cuando la cámara no está en el agua, pero las consecuencias son más dramáticas. Podés perder todas tus fotografías y tu cámara inclusive, si no tienes cuidado o si ocurre un mal funcionamiento. Rompí dos cámaras subacuáticas en un verano…
What problems can we find once underwater?
Fog in the diving mask! In fact, you can have the same problems with your camera when you are not on the water, but the consequences are more dramatic. You can lose all your photographs and your camera if you are not careful or if a malfunction happens. I broke two underwater cameras in one summer…
¿Qué equipo necesitas para realizar este tipo de fotografías?
Utilizo mi Nikonos 5, la única cámara submarina que tengo. Revelo y escaneo mis negativos en casa. Recientemente, compré una Nikon coolscan V y hace muchísimo la diferencia. Cuando comencé a disparar en película, no me di cuenta de lo importante que es en nuestro «mundo digital» tener un buen escaneo.
What equipment do you need to take this type of photographs?
I use my Nikonos 5, the only underwater camera that I have. I develop and scan my negatives at home. Recently, I have bought a Nikon coolscan V, and it changes the game. I didn’t realize when I started to shoot film, how important it is in our « digital world » to have a good scan.

Sí, podés hacerlo, pero en retrospectiva, puedo notar que las fotografías que más me gustaron, son las que hice en momentos auténticos en los que sentí algo real e interesante para captar.
Si tengo que hacerle una dirección a la modelo, lo hago esencialmente fuera del agua. A veces hago dibujos para explicar en términos muy gráficos, lo que me gustaría fotografiar.
Is it possible to make the direction of your models underwater?
Yes, you can do it, but in hindsight, I can notice that the photographs that I liked the most are the ones I took in authentic moments, in which I felt something real and interesting to capture.
If I have to direct the model, I do it essentially out of water. Sometimes I draw to explain in very graphic terms what I would like to photograph.
¿Qué consejo le darías a una persona que quiere empezar a hacer fotografía subacuática?
Solo hay que dar el paso (una muy buena broma en los 90s). Si tuviera que dar un consejo, motivaría a las personas que quieran hacer fotografías subacuáticas a probar muchas cosas, como por ejemplo, las dobles exposiciones. Que prueben muchos lugares subacuáticos: ríos, lagos…la luz puede ser completamente diferente a la del mar.
What advice would you give to a person who wants to start doing underwater photography?
You just have to take the plunge (a very good joke in the ’90s). If I have to give a piece of advice, I would motivate people who want to do underwater photographs, to try a lot of things like double exposures, for example. Try a lot of underwater places: rivers, lakes… the light can be completely different than the sea.
